Pictured with Gary Edwards, President of Rotary, are Boys & Girls Club members and weekly cooking class participants Eliza, Vianny and Ashley. Each week, the Club provides cooking classes where the kids participate in the process of preparing, cooking and eating healthy meals and snacks, often times using ingredients from the Club's garden. Keystone Club Attend Regional Conference
Press Release: Nov. 19, 2009 Boys & Girls Club’s Keystone Club members Attend Pacific Region Conference Last weekend six teens from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley attended the Keystone Club Pacific Region Conference in San Mateo, hosted by Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula. The Club’s Keystone members attended sessions about Time Management, Goal Setting, Diversity, Spoken Word and participated in career-based fieldtrips to Google, Oracle, Apple, Ebay and Facebook. Sonoma Keystone members quickly came out of their shells and made friends with teens from Utah and Laguna Beach. Keystone Clubs are chartered small group leadership development clubs for young people ages 14-18. Keystone members elect officers, choose their own activities and plan and implement community service projects. "I have learned a great deal from Keystone. I have learned to plan events when people don't think that it's possible. I've learned to get along with people my age along with older people. I've learned that if I put my mind to things, I can accomplish anything, especially if I have support from others. I feel that I still have a lot to learn from this program as I continue to attend and set my mind to things." BGC Sonoma Keystone member One of the biggest highlights of the conference was hearing Maria Reyes, one of the original Freedom Writers, speak about the challenges she faced growing up and how reading and writing, encouraged by an influential teacher, changed her life. Boys & Girls Club Keystone members are currently planning a toy drive, food drive, an all night lock-in and several activities to take place at the Club and on the Sonoma Valley High School campus. The bar has been raised and a commitment has been made to truly “Be the Difference” in each of their lives and in their community. » read more...
